BEAUTIFUL JUNE. The mornings are still cool, the air fragrant. Leaves have matured and flushed out. The light hits differently, hanging golden in dewy air. In the spirit of this vibrant month when we move closer to real summer, we present people and experiences that give life to our cultural garden. Stop and smell the flowers.—BK

Dorothy Shain Henderson’s best ideas come in unexpected places

WHEN IT COMES TO COLOR, Dorothy Shain Henderson knows what to do. The Greenville-based artist, who founded Dorothy Shain Fine Art & Design in 2014 “with an entrepreneurial spirit and soaring ambitions,” has collaborated with big-name brands such as Anthropologie and Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit to create limited-edition bathing suits and packaging. Her original patterns adorn textiles and wallpaper, and her prints, featuring sneakers, vintage cars, and western landscapes, have iconic appeal.
We asked Dorothy about the spaces that keep her inspired.
This is going to sound funny, but I have always gotten the best ideas in the shower. So it’s not a surprise that my bathroom, a tiny room that packs a punch with my wallpaper, artwork, and color, is where so many ideas come. My assistant gifted me a shower notepad that I keep in there to scribble everything down! Even though this room is tiny, it is overflowing with pieces from different artists and brands I love and that inspire me. Every detail tells a story, down to the Modern Matter dogwood hardware on the vanity.
The other interior space I feel most inspired in is my baby girl’s nursery. It’s a space that I filled with textiles and art I designed just for her. It’s so calming and allows me to turn off work at the end of the day and be present. Yet, the moment I relax—that’s when the ideas happen.

Certified sommelier Ed Buffington cues up his summer wine rotation
THE LIVIN’ IS EASY—at least with a great bottle. We asked Ed Buffington, co-owner and co-founder of The Community Tap in Greenville, for his top wines of the season.
One of my go-to summer wines is a 100 percent Macabeo made by Rocio Granado Herrero, imported from La Mancha, Spain, by Mary Taylor Wine. Drinks like it costs way more than it does!
Malvasía Volcánica from Bodegas Los Bermejos is a super unique grape grown in the pure volcanic soils of the Canary Islands. A real stunner.
Does it get any more summery than Orange Crush? A skin fermented blend of Pinot Gris, Muscat, and Riesling from Limited Addition Wines. Chad and Bree Stock have made the ultimate juicy summer wine here.
We all love red wine, but in the heat of summer sometimes I like to knock a chill on my reds. Enter Tarpon Cellars’ Cambaro Red—a fantastic summer red made by owner and winemaker Jeremy Carter.
Pierre Paillard NV Champagne. Why? Because it’s always Champagne season.
Ed Buffington is a certified sommelier and the co-owner and co-founder of The Community Tap. Born and raised in Atlanta, he put down roots in Greenville in 2003 after living in Europe where his passion for wine began.

Savereign is more than a treasure trove of flora
By Colin Brake
IT HAS LONG BEEN SAID that humanity and nature are at odds. If so, Savereign is proving history wrong. With a variety of flora for the home and locally made pots, candles, and mugs, the plant shop is not just a pocket of exotic nature in the Village of West Greenville, but also a space for creativity and community—it doubles as a podcast and co-working studio. Come to Savereign to enliven your living space; stay to enrich your imagination.
Savereign, 1256 Pendleton St, Ste B, Greenville. Tues–Sat, 11am–6pm; Sun, 12–4pm. @savereign

Hester General Store creates more than blue-ribbon pies

SOME THINGS should never change. Walking into the nostalgic Hester General Store, I’m welcomed by the chime of a shopkeeper’s bell and summoned by a whiff of warm berry pie—sensations that whisper, “You’re in the South.” Yet this celebrated bakery and general store in Dacusville, whose walls dazzle with local artwork, is anything but traditional.
Since opening Hester in 2021, LGBT+ trailblazer and baker Katie Chaney has been an alchemist of old and new ways. She carefully preserves the Hester family’s centuries-old store—one on the National Register of Historic Places—and yet the shop’s details tell her own blossoming story. I’m drawn to each nook of the place, where cedar shelves hold “Y’all Means All!” candles from Greenville Soy Candle Co. and products by other regional makers like Ink Meets Paper.

Hester is not just a one-stop-shop for delectable baked goods and locally sourced essentials—it is a welcoming space for all. Katie says it best herself: “We’re here to make magic moments.”
